POLICE SEARCH FOR WYNDHAM ST. ASSASSINS
THE POLICE THIS MORNING are conducting a wide search, without very much hope of success, for the three unknown Chinese who, at 8.50 o'clock last night, shot and chopped down Shum Shung, 30-year old nephew of Wang Ching-wei.
The murder occurred at the entrance to an alleyway a few
yards down Wyndham Street from the "China Mail" ·· office. Two representatives of the "China Mail" hap- pened to be just round the corner in Queen's Road Central at the time, and were among the very first on the scene.

INTENSITY
At six a.m. to-day, the typhoon was about 120 miles south-by-west of Hong Kong, moving W.N.W. at 15 miles an hour, having increased in intensity.
The Observatory also reported that the Pacific depression is situated about 250 miles to the north of Yap, moving W.N.W. A ridge of high pressure ex- tends from Central China to the Pacific south-east of Japan.
The No. 1 signal which was hoisted early this morning was lowered be- fore one o'clock this afternoon.
The position of the typhoon is now given as 21 N. 112 E.
BUTTERFIELD AND SWIRE'S FINED
Shum Shung was lying on his back, his arms flung wide and his legs doubled up. Blood was pouring from two bullet wounds and a large gash in the head and, although he was groaning, a superficial examination showed that he was beyond aid.
He died quietly within six minutes and without changing his position.
Pending the arrival of the police and the ambulance, the "China Mail" representatives helped keep the large crowd back and circulated among the few foreigners who were near the scene at the time, looking. for eye-witnesses.
TWO SHOTS
Private Spink, of the Royal Scots,. told the "China Mail" that he was within a few yards of Shum Shung but on the other side of the street,. when the murder occurred. He heard two shots ring put and turning has- tily, saw three Chinese running from the scene.
They were dressed in ordinary Chinese clothes-two of them in black and one in white-and were lost to sight before he had time to really realise what had happened.
Messrs. Butterfield and Swire were summoned before Mr. R. A. D. For-Mail," he stayed on the scene rest this morning for failing to furn- ish the passenger list of the s.S. the police. Chekiang, and the s.s. Mui Nam, within the prescribed period, on July 25 and 29.

Other eye-witness included a sian woman who was practically brushed by the murderers as they fled up the street; Leung Sau, a Chinese woman who was sleeping on the pavement only a yard or two away;: and several chair-coolies.
The handle of a Chamberlain-type umbrella was found by the "China · Mail" à few yards away. It had been snapped off, probably when the victim fell. Two brand-new choppers were found near the corner of On Lan Street, down which, the killers believed to have fled.,
