Lawrence Strikes Best Form To Win 100 Yards' Title Chan Chan-Nam Wins 880 By Two Lengths Of Bath
V.R.C. Upset Critics In Medley; Also Win Ladies' Relay
(By "ADREM")
THERE WERE NO SURPRISES at Victoria Recreation Club last night on the second day of the Colony Champion- ship Swimming Gala, most of the favourites winning with something to spare.
Most thrilling race of the evening was the 100 yards free style which was won by the holder, Wilfred Lawrence, whose time was within one-fifth of the Colony record, held by himself.
The 880 free style was won, as anticipated, by Chan Chan-nam of Chinese Y.M.C.A., who maintained a crack- ing pace throughout to win by two clear lengths of the bath.

H.K. SWIMMERS
IN SHANGHAI CHAMPIONSHIPS
Shanghai, August 10. Outstanding performance in last night's eliminations for the Shanghai Swimming Championships to be held at the Foreign Y. M. C. A. on Tuesday was the victory of Z. K. Lok, a former St. John's student over Archie Logan in the second heat of the 50 yards free style.
Lok has not been in any senior competition prior to this season and is a distinct discovery. His time of' 25-4/5 seconds was good and it now remains for Logan to vindicate him- self in the final.
Another good performance was turned in by another Chinese swim- mer, C. L. Wen, a Cantonese who has won championship races in Hong Kong. Wen defeated L. Oliveira in the first heat of the 50 yards free style in the time of 26 seconds.
-
Although no records were broken yesterday, some good times were re- corded. Another Chinese success was seen in the victory of Miss Ling Mei Ling in the first heat of the ladies' 50 yards free style, when she swam in well in front of the best competition, defeating Mrs. A. F. Johnston and. thereby establishing herself as the favourite for the final.. Miss Ling Mel Ling's time was 32 seconds, which although some way behind Miss Jac- queline Ball's record of 29-3/5 is con- sidered good. Miss D. Brown the second heat by a narrow margin from Miss B.
