OIL MINES IN FRANCE
Paris, To-day.
Progress made, in preparations for mineral oil production in France was inspected yesterday by M. de Monzie, the French Minister. for Public Works, who, according to the "Paris Soir," paid a visit to St. Hyphen Gaudens, in the Pyrenees.
Here, boring began. six months ago after 20 years of scientific re- search. So far, a depth of 1,520 metres has been reached.

hope that special machinery arriv- ing from the United States in Jar- uary will give access.
In the meantime, the French Gov- ernment has acquired exclusive mining rights in an area of 10,000 square kilometres in the depart- ments of Arige 'and Gers and a few days ago the "Autonone Petroleum Regie" was founded.
Much attention is paid to the ef- forts of the Government to produce petroleum in France, as so far only 100,000 tons out of an annual con- sumption of 500,000 tons of petrol has been produced in Trans-Ocean.

AUTARKY PLAN FOR SPAIN
Madrid, To-day.
A plan for the establishment of “absolute autarky" for Spain has been accepted by the Government, it was announced on Monday by Senor Suanzas, Minister of Com- merce and Industry.

state will play a dominant role.
Private enterprise will be made subject to a general plan but will "not be crippled."
According to this economic plan, in a few years Spain will produce 200,000 bales of cotton 'annually.
Senor Amado, the Minister of Finance, announced the creation of a committee for the absolution of exceptional profits realised in trade and industry.-Trans-Ocean.
