ROAD AND RAIL. AGREEMENT ON RATES

A new era in British freight transport may de- velop as a result of co-operation agreed upon be- tween the railways and road transport concerns.
. Mr. A. E. Sewell, joint chairman of the Road and Rail conference, made this forecast. There will still be competition--but it will be on service and not on rates, he said.

They refer to the approval given by the Transport Advisory Council to proposals of the four forms of transport-rail, road, coast ship. ping and canal-for co-ordination.
"This co-operation, when sup- ported by the necessary legislation, holds the promise of a stable and well-ordered transport system, working in the national interest, at the lowest economic rates to the public," they add.
Now it is proposed to submit for sanction to a tribunal, before whom traders may appear,

Sir Frank Bowater, Lord Mayor' of London, announced that the na-
tional fund for dependents of vic-
tims of the Thetis submarine dis- aster had reached about $112,000.
On that basis they would be able to provide pensions of £100 per annum for officers widows and £50 for widows of ratings. It was suggested that pensions on similar scales s
widows 4ld be provided for the
civilians.
For children of naval officers it was proposed to grant £20 per an num up to the age of sixteen, with a pro rata allowance for other chil- dren. It was believed that sixty- nine widows and eighty-two chil- dren would have to be provided for..
Thetis (in Greek mythology) was the daughter of Nereus, wife of Peleus and mother of Achilles. She was the chief of fifty Nereides and she dwelt in the depths of the seas with her father and sisters.
