QUALITIES OF A TRUE SOLDIER
In an introduction to the new Manual of Infantry Drill, Major- Gen. J. H. Beith (Ian Hay), Direc- tor of Public Relatoins, War Office, enumerates the qualities of the true soldier.
"The soldier," he says, "should have pride in his own smartness and efficiency and in the unit to which he belongs."
The enumeration of military qualities then continues:
Instinctive ability both to obey and to command.-The soldier is
always doing one or other of these, and intensive drill is the best met- hod of accustoming the commander to impress his will, and those under him to obey instinctively and smaritly.
Adaptability.-The soldier must instantly be ready to take orders from his commander at the moment, however frequently the hazards of battle may transfer that command; and be equally ready to take com- mand himself should occasion arise.
A sense of order and discipline. -Enables troops to be assembled and manoeuvred rapidly without confusion at the moment of emer- gency.
Resiliency or quick power of re- covery.Restores the morale of dis- organised troops in the shortest possible time.
Physical and mental endurance. -Enables a soldier, however des- perate the situation or however ex- hausted he may be, to carry on far beyond the limits of his normal strength.
The new field drill for rifle bat- talions, adopted by the Regulars and Territorial Armies last April, will also extend to the Militia. It is to be adopted on all occasions when field training is carried dut, and during movements from and to barracks or camp.
