OPPOSITION DISTRUST OF GOVERNMENT

London, To-day.

Initiating the foreign affairs debate in the House of Commons yesterday, Sir Archibald Sinclair. (Liberal) referred to the recent speech by Lord Halifax (the Foreign Secretary) in which the latter said: “Our immediate task is to re- sist aggression.”

The accredited leaders of both Opposition parties, in language equally clear, plain and down- right, had endorsed that speech, said Sir Archi- bald, but Mr. Chamberlain had not yet done so. (Conservative cries of "Oh.”)

INSPECTION

OF NANKING RAILWAY

London, To-day. Replying to a question in the House of Commons yesterday, the Under-Secretary for Foreign Affairs, Mr. R. A. Butler, said that further representations had recently been made to the Ja- panese Government by Sin Ro- bert Craigie concerning the Ja- panese authorities' refusal to al low inspection of the Shanghai- Nanking Railway line.

The inspection, said Mr. But- ler, was required in the interests of British bondholders.--Reuter.

INDIAN TROOPS FOR MALAYA

Singapore, To-day.

Troops which are being sent from India to the Malay States will be mostly Indian formations.

The detachments will probably arrive in the course of the next week. Two steamers have already been commissioned for transport- ing the troops and although the exact number is unknown, it is assumed that the contingent will be "rather large.” Trans-Ocean.
