WHEN it

that

was indicated shortly after Victoria Recreation - Club decided that a swimming Interport this year was not practicable efforts would be made by members to overcome the difficulties, I wondered. how far their natural disappointment would spur them on.

It is now apparent that things are beginning to move. Members did not just sit down and wait for a solution to present itself, they got down to business, and, now it transpires, Lionel Roza Pereira has submitted a scheme which should enable almost enough money to be raised, although it appears likely that the Club might have to bear a small portion of the cost.

The enterprise of the swimming members of V.R.C. is highly commend able and is thoroughly deserving of every support,

that such an appeal does not call for martyrs prepared ait through dull uninteresting programmes, V.R.C. functions are almost invariably enjoy able. The Club is one of the coolest spots in town and is ideally situated for the dancing which nearly always winds up the evening.

It is to be hoped therefore that the dates so far allocated for the cham- pionships, August 17, 18 and 19-will be set aside and that capacity houses will be in attendance.

HAD heard a good deal about young David Hutchinson but prior to the near future, I would emphasise the Volunteer Sports, had never seen

him in action. Here, without any doubt, is a swimmer with a futuro.

Already classed among the Colony's leading sprinters, he is not yet out of school. With the proper coaching he can be sure of obtaining at V.R.C., with whom he has thrown in his lot, there is no limit to the improvement that should attend his swimming as his physique' develops.

I can see him cracking some records before he is very much older.

VITH the envisagement of a large increase in strength, a fore- taste of which was provided in Satur- day's orders, it is apparent that in

a very short while. practically the whole of the Colony's male youth, and therefore potential sporting talent, will soon be assembled in one body."

Is it too much to expect therefore, that in return for the time, being given so willingly by these men, thất some provision will be inade by the Corps to provide them with facilities which are not otherwise available, in the sports field?

I am not suggesting that Corps has ever been backward in providing its members with social and recreational facilities but of late there has been

falling-off in interest in spheres which at one time were high- lights of Corps activities.

I have in mind the athletic sports which have been allowed to drop in the last few years. At one time this meeting was the premler track event in the Colony and was eagerly looked forward to by all young athletes..

There should be no lack of competi tors this year. Let us hope that something is done about it..
