BRITISH SCRAP GOES FOR GERMAN ARMS

The excuse for this strange state of affairs was that the scrap sold to Germany was of an inferior qual- ity, unsuitable for the steel furn- aces of Britain.
An official of the British Iron and :Steel Federation said:-
OLD CAR PARTS
"Most of the scrap now sold to Germany is non-ferrous material, not steel scrap. Germany is buy- ing it because she has to take whatever she can get."
Our exports of all kinds of scrap metals have dropped this year. From January to the end of May the average amount sent each month has been about 5,000 tons. From May to June 10 only 514 tons have been sent.
Mr. Charles Robinson, head of a firm of scrap merchants at Green- wich who last year'exported large quantities of scrap to Germany, told a reporter:
It is quite true that Germany is buying old automobile parts here. I have heard of a lot of car radia- tors being sent out, and I know who who is selling them."

Inquiries in Glasgow revealed that some of the car radiators and accumulators have been shipped from: Glasgow and Leith. For every -automobile part shipped directly to Hamburg, it is believed that at least ten more are sent to Germany In- directly.

A Glasgow merchant who is con- nected with the scrap trade said: The Germans probably have some method of “synthetically" treating the materials and getting further valuable extracts from them. They could get autimony from the accumulators, and I have heard it suggested that an extract to be obe tained from- antimony can be used: in the ma ture of explosives.
