(By "CRUSADER")

NE of the most popular of the various annual aquatic sports in Hong Kong, in which thrilling battles are staged for Unit hon- ours, is the Hong Kong Volunteer Defence' Corps Annual Aquatic meeting which will be held at V.R.C. to-morrow night, commencing at 9.30 p.m.

This meeting has always been very keenly contested, and the anticipated full house should have their fair share of excitement, with many close finishes. The teams representing the various units are all composed of the Colony's leading swimmers, and it is an extremely difficult task to forecast the winners.

Most serious contenders appear to

be the Mobile Column, Static Machine Gunners and Portuguese Company.

Machine Gun Companies, and Por- tuguese Companies have advanced a step nearer the goal by entering the

final of the water polo.

Portuguese Companies defeated the Mobiles in the semi-finals by 3-2, and Machine Gun Companies beat Corps Artillery by 5-1. Both are now cer- tain of two points even if they lose, and a possible score of four points if they emerge successful.

Machine Gun Companies' water polo team is very strongly represented. With the exception of Zimmern, an

“PORTUGUESE COYS. FOR MEDLEY RELAY

Portuguese Companies appeared to be safe bet for the Medley Relay, but now, with the recruiting of young David Hutchinson, the speedy V.R.C. swimmer, by Mobiles', prospects of the Portuguese Company, do not appear so bright.

Their star man in this event is L. M. Remedios, who will swim the 50 yards breast stroke. This young swim- mer uses the "butterfly" stroke now adopted by all Olympic swimmers and

In their 20 yards freshwater pool last Saturday night, with all sitting and standing accommoda- tion taken up to the limit, Chinese Y. M. C. A. held their first Swim- ming Gala of the Season.

Although there are no official records for the 400 yards back- stroke, I can safely state that the times attained by both Ramjahn and Lau must be nearly if not the best, ever set in Hong Kong as the speed they maintained over the dis- tance compares favourably with free style champions, A return - clash will be staged between Rumjahn and Lauat VRC on August 5 in the ret gala and the two will again foru
