NAZI SPY TRIAL CHILDREN'S PUZZLE
IN SWITZERLAND
Four members of the Swiss Nazi organisation known as "League of Faithful Confederates" and two other men were tried at Zurich on a charge of being implicated in a huge espionage ring operating throughout Switzerland,
over
The ring is alleged to have col- lected information the German in- telligence service, and to have exer- cised surveillance not only Swiss army officers and the Swiss military staffs, but also over the French Legation and the British and Czechoslovak consulates at Berne.
The members of the League are Dr. Alfred Zander, its "fuehrer," his brother Konrad, Otto Deren- dinger, a Swiss aftist, and Alfred Nikles, a business man.
The two others are Benno Wern- er Schappi, a journalist and form- er member of the National Front, another Swiss Nazi organi- sation, and Hans Stuz, cinema operator. These last two are sald to have taken but little part in the ring activities.
REPORTS FOR GERMANY Dr. Alfred Zander and a former insurance agent named Johann Frei are alleged to have directed the activities. Frei, who has since escaped to Germany, is said to have engaged agents in various parts of Switizerland, including a politician in Geneva, and to have obtained from them reports on the activities of persons prominent in political and military affairs.
These reports, it is alleged, were subsequently sent to Germany,
A Zurich hotel run by a man named Walter Oberdorfer, who has also escaped to Germany, is said to have served as the headquarters for the ring.
