LAWRENCE STILL BEST SWIMMER IN THE

THE COLONY Taylor, Hutchinson & W.K. Chan Sprint "Hopes" RUMJAHN'S GREAT

IMPROVEMENT

(By 'CRUSADER")

The various swimming clubs of the Colony have now commenced to stage their swimming meets and it is hoped that through these swimming galas the Colony will find new talent that will raise the standard of swimming to a higher degree.

At present much is still dependant on the ability of Law- rence, who, it will be admitted by those who have seen him in training and at water polo, is still the Colony's outstanding swimmer, in a class all by himself from the 100 yards free style upwards.

Lawrence has always had to hold himself in this race so as not to tire himself too much for his other events on the same day, but it would be in- teresting to see what he could really do if he put his mind and efforts seri- ously into this event.

between V.R.C. and Chinese Y.M.C.A. on August. 5. The invitation has been accepted by Chinese Y.M.C.A. and Tay- lor and Hutchinson will have to give of their best, while Rumjahn will also have to be in top form to beat Lau Yin-ting in the 100 yards backstroke.

Lau Yin-ting came third in the Co- lony championship last year.

Swimming head and high over the water with a power. ful arm drive and leg beats, Taylor is definitely a sprint swimmer and has the closest style ever seen in the Colony to Johnny Weismuller, the ex-world champion. M. de V. Soares' des- perate attempt to save.

"Nekko" Delgado, the V.R.C.'s right guard, played a commendable

game. His defence was very sound and his passes accurate which accounts a great

deal for V.R.C.'s success.

M. M. de V. Soares distinguish- ed himself before a large crowd by saving many difficult shots from

close range which would have been certain goals were it not for his splendid efforts and his quick an ticipation of his opponents' tricky shots.de

Wilfred Lawrence was the outstand- ing player in the game and worked very hard for the team. Once Wilfrec manages to get the ball he certainly runs away with it and sets the oppos- ing team's positions all upside down as he is certainly a dangerous man and a sure goal-scorer if left unmarked.

Taylor pounded a few long shots from the half-way mark and one came so fast and unexpectedly that, it enter- ed the goal with a bang.

Taylor's long shots are spectacular and very tricky, but he should break away at times and feed his team mates. more. During this game they were quite often left unmarked and had bet- ter chances of shooting, than he himself -in his position.

Hussain played a hard game and di his best and, although at times his op ponents appeared dangerous, Hussain,

Hutchinson is still young and, though a naturally good swimmer, has much to learn. He did not have an oppor- tunity of competing against Chung Shing recently owing to his examina- tions though his performance was look ed forward to eagerly by many. H will have ample opportunity in th near future.

Revenge!

V.R.C. will put up a much stronger re- lay team in their coming match with Chinese Y.M.C.A. and will try hard to turn the tables.

Chinese Y.M.C.A. are holding their first gala on Saturday. There will be a.400 yards free style event, and a 100 yards backstroke event.

An interesting_race"should be wit- nessed in the latter event between Rumjahn and Lau Yin-ting; Row con- sidered the best in the Colony and most serious contenders for the coming championships. The former will be somewhat handicapped by swimming in fresh water, but Luigi Soares, his coach, is certain that he will put up : good showing and believes there are few who can beat him in this event.
