REPRESENTATIONS IN TOKYO QUEENS & ALHAMBRA

London, To-day.

The most recent reports received by the Foreign Secretary indicated that smuggling in North China had been reduced to negligible propor- tions, said the Under-Secretary for Foreign Affairs, Mr. R. A. Butler, in the House of Com- mons yesterday.

No reply had been received from the Japanese Government to the latest British representa- tions on the matter.

Our Ambassador in Tokyo would continue to press the matter in re- gard to the action of the so-called Nanking reformed government in endeavouring to insist that certifi- cates from the Japanese authori ties before clearance to inland ports be granted to British ships. IMPORTANT ISSUES.

Sir J. S. Wardlaw-Milne (Conser- vative): If we acquiesced to the Japanese demand, would it not amount to recognition of the re- formed government, and would it not amount to agreeing that Japanese might manipulate Customs as they like?

The present Earl, whose family name is Coke, is the third to hold the title which was created in 1887.

The family boasts of an excep- tional record of longevity since the first Earl--the present Earl's grandfather-died at the age of 88 ● and the second Earl at the age of 87. The second Earl who was born when his father was 70, was twice married and had 16 children eldest, being 49 years older than of whom the present Earl was the his youngest brother.
