"France and Great Britain have not only the duty of maintaining the integrity and indepen- ‹dence of their empires, they have also to maintain in the world a certain degree of security" M. Georges Bonnet, French Foreign Minister, declar- ed in an exclusive interview with the "Sunday *Times."

Dealing with Franco-British re- lations, M. Bonnet said: "Relations between both countries could not be better than they are to-day. For years, these relations have been placed upon a friendly basis but, within the last year especial- ly, our friendship became estab- lished on the realistic foundation of close co-operation in all spheres, political, military and economical. One can fairly say that the two nations have now become comple- mentary:"
INTOLERABLE
Turning to the situation in Europe and the present political tension, the Minister pursued: "It is intolerable that peoples should experience every day fears for the security of their frontiers. It is intolerable that they should awake every morning in fear of violence and war. The efforts French and British diplomacies are pursuing have no other object than to main- tain the security of the various na- tions and to ensure peace."
Questioned by the interviewer on the prospects of the negotiations, at present going on in Moscow, M. Bonnet déclared:
"We are neglecting. no effort in order that these negotiations ar- rive at a favourable result, We hope that it will be possible to bring these conversations to a suc-
cessful conclusion,"
POSITION CLEAR
As regards the French attitude towards Poland, M. Bonnet said: "It is sufficient to recall. M. Daladier's speech of April 14 and my own declaration on June 9 be- fore the Franco-Polish Parliamen tary group, to understand Toma position which is perfectly clear: France and Poland guarantee each other immediately and directly against any menace, direct or in- direct, which could harm their vital interests. Poland knows she can count not only on her own
· proverbial heroism, but also on the support without reserve both of Great Britain and France in case of an attempt against her indepen- dence or her rights.”
