The set consists of 14 values and -is issued to commemorate the cen- tenary of the birth of King Carol I, grandfather of the present monarch. Carol, or Charles as he is known to the encyclopedists,

elected Hospodar, or Prince, of Rumania on April 20 (his birthday) 1866 after Prince Alexander Cuza had been for- ced to abdicate. Three years later Carol married Princess Elizabeth of Wied, who became widely known in literary circles under the name of Carmen Sylva. On these stamps issued in his hon- our, we see 'Carol in many stages of his career. On the 25 bani -gray- brown and 50b violét brown he is shown' in two battles of the Russo- Turkish War. The 1 leu dark pur ple depicts the scene, on March 26, 1881, when he was offered the crown of his country. Two of the royal residences, Sigmaringen Castle in Southern Germany and Peles Castle in Rumania appear on the 1.50L green, The 2L gray-green pictures Carol and Queen Elizabeth, probably

at the time of their marriage. sequence of stamps carries the king through several stages of his life as we see him at the age of 6 on the 8L red-orange, as a major-general in 1866 on the 4L dark-laké, as a' gen- eral in 1877 on the 5L gray, and as a general in action on the 8L light blue. The 7L black-brown presents an equestrian statue of him, The 10L deep rose shows Carol on horse- back in his later years, and the por- trait on the 12L gray-blue was taken just before his death. Heads of Carol and Elizabeth, in the later years of their reign, are beautifully presented on the 16L ultramarine, and the series ends with a 16L dark green stamp picturing the tomb of Carol in Bucharest.

BRAZILIAN RE-ISSUE FURTHER tribute to the New York World's Fair is made by Brazil in the re-issue of the 1936 stamp set commemorating the cen tenary of the birth of the noted Bra- zilian, composer A. Carlos Gomes, On May 9 Burle Marx, Brazilian com- poser-conductor, led the New York Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra in a concert at the World's Fair Music Hall. Among the works played was the "Il Guarany" overture of Gomes. A portion of this overture appears on one of the stamps in this re-issued series. The other stamp presents a portrait of the musician. Values are 300 reis and 700 reis.

ALBANIAN OVERPRINTS -

THE expected philatelic changes

following Italy's occupation of Albania have begun to appear. Pend- ing the issue of a complete new post- nge series to be issued under Italian rule, overprints have been made on eleven values of current Albanian stamps. The new inscriptions read: "Mbledhja Kushtetuese” (National Assembly) and the date "12-IV-1939- XVIII," (April 12th, 1989-eigh- teenth year of Fascist Italy). overprinted items are: 1 qind, 2q and 50q-view of Lake Butrinto; 5q, 102, 152 and 25q-portrait of King Zog; 1 franc and 2^fr-Zogu Bridge; 3fr and 5fr-ruins.

THE 90 centimes stamp recently

issued in honour of the battle- ship "Clemenceau" has been with- drawn following a protest from Ger- many that it was too "war-like" in intention.

A 3fr value of the Ceres type, in dull rose has appeared.

Recent changes in postal rates have caused many French items to be withdrawn, though some of them enjoyed a very brief career. Some of these are the 90c "La Fontaine". ifr 75 "Champagne", 1fr 75 "British of Royal Visit" and 2F "Arch Orange".
