BOY OF 16 BIDS FOR £2,000 JOB

London, June 29.

By riding the winner of the Stud Produce Stakes at Newmarket yesterday, sixteen-year-old Dou- glas Marks brought a step nearer the possi- bility that he may become jockey to the King, at £2,000 a year.

He has won a number of races, and it is thought he will be considered for the post at the end of the flat racing season.

CABLE BLAZE ON RAILWAY

When the insulation of electric trunk cables alongside the Southern Railway, near Malden, Surrey, was ignited by a grasa fire, the current was switched off for an hour, but the railway cables were not affect ed.

The job fell vacant last week, Jack Crouch, aged twenty-four, was killed while flying to Newcastle

races.

Marks is an apprentice jockey to Mr. W. R. Jarvis, who trains the King's horses at Newmarket. He was told at the last minute yester- day that he would ride Godiva in the-Stud Produce Stakes,

Mr. Jarvis gave him the chance because he got on well with the horse at exercise. Marks won by a length, repeating the victory gained for Mr. Jarvis by Jack Crouch in the same race last year.
