ANTI-AIRCRAFT EFFICIENCY
I spent several hours on board the French bat- tleship or more correctly battle cruiser-Dunker- que, flagship of the French Atlantic fleet, which, with her sister-ship Strasbourg, is paying a visit to Liverpool en route to Oban and Rosyth, writes Hector Bywater in the London “Daily Telegraph."

After being received by Admiral Gensoul, com- mander-in-chief of the French Atlantic fleet, I was conducted over the ship and shown things which I understand have never previously been exhibited to a foreign journalist.
The Dunkerque and Strasbourg are nominally ships of 26,500 tons, but I was told on board that at full load they displace 34,000| tons.
They have an importance that goes far beyond that of ordinary warships, for they represent a use- ful counter-weight to the new Ger- man battleships Scharnhorst and Gneisenau, of 26,000 tons.
HEAVILY PROTECTED
It will be at least 18 months be- fore our own Navy has capital ships equivalent in modernity to these French and German units.
The Dunkerque is the most heavi ly protected vessel ever built in France, and I was told something about the secrets of her internal defences which supplement the stout armour on the waterline and other vital parts.
Her eight 13-in guns, mounted in
· two quadruple turrets on the fore deck, can fire at the rate of two rounds per minute so that in that time she can discharge 16 pro-. jectiles, each of which weighs about 1.350lb.

The gunnery officer told me that the quadruple turrets, looked on as 2 daring experiment, have proved completely successful. was informed that the Dunkerque and Strasbourg are the straightest shooting ships in the French Navy.

The secondary armament of 16 5.1in guns is disposed partly in quadruple and partly in twin
twin tur rets. These guns - have such high angle of elevation, nearly 80 degrees, that they can be used most effectively against aircraft as well as surface targets.
INFORMAL STAFF TALKS
They are reinforced by 40 heavy and light machine-guns-on multiple highangle mountings.
There is no doubt that host aircraft would get a very hot ception.
The bridge and control tower forms a huge structure which is even more lofty than the famous “Queen Anne's: Manaforts Nelson and Rodney.

School authorities investigating the_branding of Melvyn Bridge, a Jewish boy student at the Gwynn Falls High School, Balti more, have suspended eighteen students.
The boy, who is fifteen, was beaten by ten other youths, mem- bers of a pro-Nazi organisation known as the Junior Bund. They scratched a large "H" on the boy's neck with a pen-knife.
