HAVING already virtually deprived them of the ....C.

"B" and "C" Division League tennis titles, South China yesterday created one of the greatest sensations in recent years when they defeated Chin- ese Recreation Club in “A” Division by 5 sets to 4.

Added merit is given to this performance owing to the fact that whereas C.R.C. were at full strength and turned out their best team for the first time this season, their opponents were without the services of Tennie Kwok, who is on the injured list, and had to play a reserve from a lower division, thus losing three sets right off

the reel.

South China led 2-1 after the first round and 4-2 after the next.

Closing stages of the match were very thrilling and great excitement prevailed among the large crowd of spectators attracted by this Chinese "derby."

C.R.C. DISAPPOINT

The C.R.C. players must have been very disappointing to their supporters. Tsui Wai-pui, in part- nership with W. C. Hung, was very erratic and is obviously not the force that he can be when in a dominating position. At stages yesterday he would not have been recognised as the player position encountered in the Open wont to toy with the feeble

The South China pair were never really in difficulties al- though they had to be very careful whilst dealing with the constant LAWN TENNIS stream of lobs which came over the

FINCHER.

Recreio's hopes of being in at the kill in the "A" Division, of the Tennis League were shattered yesterday when they unexpectedly lost to K.C.C.-on the latter's courts by 5% sets to 3% after being 12-1% at the end of the first round and 2-4 down at the end of the second.

The man of the match was Teddy Fincher, who gave a dazzling display South China, when they have Ten. of aggressive tennis. Producing per- nie Kwok back in the side in about fectly judged lobs to which the Re- a week's time, will take a lot

The fact that this partnership dropped only four games in three sote was a tribute to Fincher's fine display.

Broadbridge again gave a promising 46 display, his volleying being his main 6-4 asset. Gray played well against Re- 62 medios and Gonsalves, but it was Guest and Crawford who made a K.C.C. win 4-6 possible when they beat Gosano and Remedios 7-5, after leading 3-1. Guest's steadiness and cool display was responsible for this pair's 12 sets.

W. P. Wang again confirmed the impression given in his pre- vious engagements of being one of the finest players at present in the Colony.

Of

A. V. Remedios played his usual game, but Gonsalves was very patchy, especially against Fincher and Burnett, against whom he did little right. Gosano had an off day and his partner was too flashy to be of great assistance. to him. Barros volleyed well on the backhand, but his forehand was weak, and Barretto was the more reliable.

Had Recreio, who were again with- out J. J. Remedios, won yesterday they would have still been in the running for the title, having beat South China, nad also lost one, to C.R.C They now have two hard matches ahead of them, against I.R.C. and C.R.C.

was never in the picture and was beaten 6-1, 6-2, 6-2;

Yesterday he was easily the most brilliant player on view. And, at certain stages, he needed to be. Szeto Bick at periods was terribly erratic especially overhead and Wang could never afford to take chances. He was mainly respon- sible for South China's victory by playing a big part in the winning of three sets.

Of the other home players, Liu Kwai-fan and C.
