MALAYAN PRINCE WAS LOVER OF ENGLISH EX-TUTOR'S WIFE

London, May 27.

A young Malayan prince, caught with his English ex-tutor's wife in her bedroom after the tutor had forced open the door, shouted: "Sorry, sir"--and bolted.

The prince, to whom the wife re- ferred in one of her letters as the "boy," was cited as co-respondent in the Divorce Court yesterday..

Mr. Bernard Preedy, an officer in the education department of the Federated. Malay States, and formerly headmaster of. Clifford School, Kuala Kangsar, Perak, Malaya, was granted a decree nisi on-the ground of the adultery of his wife, Lilian Josephine, with Raja Mohamed, who was formerly a pupil at Mr. Preedy's school.

Raja Mohamed is a nephew and adopted son of the former Sultan of Perak.

Frequent acts of adultery be tween the wife and Raja Mohamed and specifically on April 15, 16 and 17, 1937, at the school house, Clif- ford-road, Kuala Kangsar, were al- leged.

Mrs. Preedy denied her husband's allegations, Raja Mohamed did not appear.

The marriage was in August, 1927, at Torpoint, Cornwall, when Mr. Preedy was thirty-two and his wife twenty-one.

They afterwards lived at South Zeal, near Okehampton, Devon; Saltash, Cornwall, and later at Kuala Kangsar,

Mr. Justice Hodson, given judg- ment, said Mrs. Preedy had given evidence denying adultery. Raja Mohamed was a member of a royal family in Malaya.

Nothing, however, was done, and the parties lived apart until 1936. During the separation, Mr. Preedy voluntarily paid his wife an allowance which in proportion to his income, was fair and not un- generous.

He saw her on one or two occa- sions in 1935, when he was home on leave, and a good deal of her talk was about her debts and financial difficulties. Whether that had any bearing on her subsequent conduct or not, she rejoined him in Malaya in 1936.

WIFE SAID RAJA, WAS A "NICE-MANNERED BOY" He (the Judge) was unable to accept the wife's statement that, having invited her to come back, her husband at once turned against her with hatred, and made it plain that he wanted no more to do with her.

They lived together, not in great harmony, in 1986 and the early part of 1937, and it was during this time that the wife's association with Raja Mohamed began.

Raja Mohamed had been a pupil at the school while Mrs. Preedy was in England. He began to take the wife out horse-ridiny and Mr. Preedy's suspicions vure aroused.

Mr. Preedy asked his wife if she I had misconducted herself with Raja Mohamed. She replied that she had not done so, and that he was a "nice-mannered boy.”

On April 9 she went to Penang for three days without her hus- band. She was there in the society of Mohamed, but there was no al- legation that they committed adultery there.

That night Raje Mohamed stayed in Mr. Preedy's' ngalow. By that time the relationship was such that the co-respondent was in love with Mrs. Preedy to her knowledge, and she was, at any rate, fond of him. They were in constant association for the next few days.

The evidence of that day repre- sented the climax in the case. Mrs. Preedy had stated that the co-res- pondent came to the house that night because she was frightened to be alone, though she had told her husband she was not and had tried to get a woman to stay with her, without success.

It was hardly an adequate ex- planation for, having Mohamed there. She could surely have gone to the house of some friends.

--- What happened on April 17 was that Mr. Freedy returned home with

afriend, a Mr. Walker.
