AID TO CHINA

London, To-day.

The British Government proposes to continue to give effect to the resolutions of the League of Nations in favour of maximum sympathetic aid to China.

The Under-Secretary for Foreign Affairs, Mr. R. A. Butler, made this statement in the House of Commons yesterday in reply to Mr. J. W. Ban- field (Labour), who asked a question in con- nection with the recent Geneva speech by the Foreign Secretary.

Asked by Mr. Robert Morgan (Conservative) to state what effect the Government had given to

the

various League resolutions, Mr. Butler said he was sending Mr. Mor- gan an extract from the minutes of the League Council.

At the Council meeting Lord Hali- fax had made it clear that the Gov- ernment had not departed from the policy prescribed for League mem- bers in previous resolutions, men- tioning the lines in which they had taken action in recognition of their obligations under those resolutions.

CYCLIST BADLY INJURED

Desperate combats have been raging there for about a week. The Japanese have brought artil- lery and bombers into action, keep- ing up a fierce bombardment of the Chinese positions.

In south Shansi, fighting of great intensity is raging on a wide front running from Changtienchen, south of Hsiahsien, to Yuhsiang via Anyi, Yuncheng and Chiehsien.

The Japanese land drive, sup- ported by artillery and aircraft, has as its objectives, Pinglu and Maotsingtu, important Yellow River crossing, which the Japanese have made several abortive attempts to capture in the past.

The Japanese column driving from Changtienchen has met with a serious reverse and is now re- treating in the direction of Ta- chengtsun,

The Chinese have also recap- tured Shenghangchien, and Han- yaotsun.

On the Chiehsien sector, the Ja- panese are held in check. Cen- tral News.
