Canada-bade the King and Queen farewell on her side of the gigantic Niagara Falls last night, as over the water the United States waited in a mood of tense suspense to receive the first reigning British monarch to set foot on United States soil accompanied by his Queen.
Nearly 500,000 "neighbours" of the two great De- mocracies of the Western Hemisphere had ga- thered throughout the day to witness the his- toric border over which Mr. Cordell Hull (the American Secretary of State) on arrival from Washington to greet Their Majesties with a handshake, spoke of his "pleasing mission of an informal nature.'

Cheers greeted the statement by the Colonies Secretary, Mr. Malcolm Macdonald, in the House of Commons yesterday that free gifts from Malaya towards, the cost of Empire defence during the past 20 years amounted to more than £7,250,000.
