Confusion Bay's Great

Only Pony Capable Of Extending Rose Elect

Mr. Ho Hong-Ping's Vast Improvement

(By "RAPIER")

Second stage of the Fifth Extra Race Meeting, postponed from the previous Monday, was held on Saturday under peculiar atmos- pheric conditions.

Starting off under a blazing sun, it ended in a downpour of rain-much-to-the-consternation of those who attended.

(Mr. Churchill) had to fight hard beat Rose Jane (Mr. Encarnacao).

to

In each of its previous outings, Love- ly Star has failed to give satisfaction and yet on Saturday it was strongly fancied, probably because Mr. B. L. Tao

was on top.

Starting off at a great pace, this pony was acually leading, but once in the home straight it simply refused to run! It is certainly most undependable. -In Close Attendance Pinfarthings was in close attend- The day's racing, on the whole, ance all the time, and after it had

Once again, Mr. Encarnacno, four wins, assumed the role of leading jockey for the day, followed by Mr. A. W. Raymond, with two wins.

After a long interval, Mr. L. Dunbar carried off honours among the owners by virtue of one win and two seconds.

Mr. Proulx's Effort Only four starters faced the gate for the Whitsun Plate, over 11 miles, in which Confusion Bay (Mr. Black), as was expected, took the lion's share in the betting.

Mr. Encarnacao set the pace on Rob Roy, but Mr. Black was content to keep Confusion Bay within striking dis-

Moonlight tance, whilst

View (Mr.

Pih) kept piodding along.

Before rounding the bend, Mr. Proulx tried to steal the race and sent Bear Claw into a lead which the pony was unable to maintain.

The race down the home stretch de- volved into a tussle between the two extremes in weight, Moonlight View, 140 lbs., and Confusion Bay, 168 lbs., but the latter's superiority was never in doubt once it got in front.

Confusion Bay's win was convin- cing, and in my estimation it is now about the only pony among the "A" Class animals capable of extending Rose Elect, the reigning champion, and a great battle should ensue when they meet. The second race, the first section of the Lama Handicap, over 14 miles, was quite interesting to watch, and by Time. winning again on Advancing Mr. Ho Hong-ping revealed great im- provement in his riding. graduating from the novice class, and he should manage this before many meetings are over.

-Advancing Time took the lead after passing the mile post, and it continued to win, in spite of all Mr. Pih could do on Plain View, which was second.

The surprise of the race was Flyby- night, ridden by Mr. Tang, which secured third position, and, by so do- ing paid the highest dividend of the day.

“A Great Pony"

In the third race, the. Sharks Bay Handicap for Australian ponies of this season, Janber, belonging to the Mar- ber Stable, redeemed itself after its failure on the first day and re-estab- lished itself as a favourite,

Here again, the race was decided practically from the start. Taking the lead, Janber ran like a champion. It slowed down before reaching the Rock, and although it was strongly challeng ed by Mr. Black on Baffin Bay, proved itself too good.

The next race, the second section of the Lama Handicap, over 1% miles, which was also the first leg of the "Daily Double," revealed that Some Hope is not only a sprinter of merit but a pony capable of winning over a long distance.

LAWN BOWLS OPEN PAIRS

THRILLING TUSSLE AT KOWLOON F.C.

By far the most interesting game played yesterday in the Open Pairs Lawn Bowls competition was the one between W. McLeod and W. Dall of Police Recreation Club and M. Fergusson and R. Morrison at Kowloon Football Club.

The Police pair registered a four in the first head but the opponents, through steady bowling led at the ninth head which included a five,| by 14 shots to 6. The losers kept the lead till the 16th head leading by 17 shots to 15, but the Police scored a three in the next head to take the lead for the first time.

At the 21st head the score was 20-18 in favour of the Police. Mor- rison, lying two, in attempting draw the extra shot for game, knock- ed up a wood to with his third wood rob himself of one shot. With his last wood he drew another shot to tie the score,

EASY PASSAGE

Tribute was soon

passed by Wild Bear, but the latter met with stern op-

position from Some Hope. With a great finish expected, Some Hope shot for ward and won by four lengths, with Wild Bear second and Magog third.

In the Woollahra Handicap, from the two mile post distance, Devonian (Mr. Black) took the lead, with Cockleroi (Mr. Needa) a length behind. Happy and Chiltern Landings (Mr. Davis)

(Mr. Encarnacao) followed.

Reasserted Itself Nearing the Rock, Cockleroi passed Devonian, but not long after the latter reasserted itself and again led until about 50 yards from the post. So well was it running at that stage that I really thought it was going to win, but it was unable to last.

In the meantime, Chiltern came up strongly. and after overhauling De- to win vonian flashed past Cockleroi by half a length.

The seventh race, the Green Island Handicap (Second Section) from the 12 mile post, resulted in a fine win for Rose-Queen. This success can be attributed to the splendid manner in Mr. Encarnacao handled his which mount.

Galveston Bay got away to a flying start, with Laughing Girl about three lengths behind.

As the race progressed, Laughing nearly caught up with Girl Galveston Bay. These two fought side by side down the home straight, with Galveston Bay slightly in front, but about 50 yards from the post Rose- Queen revealed a great burst of speed. and overhauled Laughing Girl, and then Galveston Bay, to win by a length.

Those who made the right connection in this race were rewarded with $99.70 dividend in the "Daily Double."

Only four ponies faced the starter in the Beaufort Handicap, one mile, and Jennifer (Mr. Proulx) jumped in front, followed by Hectic View (Mr. Pih), with Galaxy (Mr. Needa) in the

rear.

the

The Portuguese pair found green much to their liking and both played well.

The Club pair were only being led by three shots at the ninth head but in the next four heads the Recreio pair scored 11 shots which included two fours. Howell and Bebbington only scored three singles for the rest of the game.

The following were the results of games played yesterday.
