The arrest by the Japanese of a Briton, Mr. R. M. Tinkler, in Pootung yesterday, has taken a graver turn than was revealed in the first des- patches on the affair.

The Japanese allegation in con- nection with the affair is that ten British employees of the factory, including Tinkler, tried to inter- vene when Japanese sailors were escorting rioters to Japanese head- quarters.
They allege that an attempt was made to wrestle away the sailors' rifles and that Tinkler threatened the officer in charge with a revol-
ver.
