ANGLO-FRENCH EFFORTS TO FIND PACT FORMULA Determined On Agreement At All Costs New Proposals ARMED ROBBERS
Put Forward
Paris, To-day.
To devise new pact proposals which would prove satisfactory to the Kremlin by providing for the desired guarantees to the Baltic States and which at the same time would avoid giving offence to the Baltic States themselves, seems to be the task on which the entire energy of the French and British Governments is concen- trated at present.
GET IN: LEAVE WITHOUT ROBBING
An extraordinary incident oc- curred last night at the re- sidence, No. 44, Portland Street, of Dr. Wu Chan-ling.
At about 11.35 p.m., six men, four of them armed with pistols, including a Mauser, gained en- trance by pretending to be pati- ents, and then left, after about ten minutes, without searching the place or stealing anything.
On the stairs later were found a bag of walnuts, presumably intended for use as gags, some wire and two knives.
"Petit Parisien" which is closely connected with the French Foreign Office, declares that the British and French Governments are absolute-DETECTIVE'S ly determined that an agreement with the So-CONDITION viet be reached at all cost.
The French and British Govern- ments, says "Le Jour," are con- sidering pact proposals on the following three alternative lines:
Firstly, a tacit understanding to assist the Baltic States, which would be in the form of a guaran- tee similar to that which France and Britain gave to Switzerland, Belgium and the Netherlands,
Secondly, a three-power declara: tion in support of maintenance of the status
quo-in north-eastern Europe, and
a
Thirdly, guarantee of the vital interests of the Baltic States.
