GUARDS AGAINST NIGHT STARVATION
Tsingtao Tactics
London, To-day. SEVERAL pertinent questions regarding conditions in Tsingtao were asked in the House of Commons yesterday by Sir A. N. Stewart- Sandeman (Conserva- tive, Middleton).
He asked whether the Prime Minister was aware that the Jap- anese naval mission' ht Tsingtao now required landing permits for each separate bill of lading in respect to goods shipped on Bri- tish vessels,
That cargoes have to be stored for several days on an open wharf, and
That no restrictions have been placed on cargoes arriving by Japanese vessels.
RETALIATION?
Would the Prime Minister, he asked, indicate to the Japanese Government that unless the res- trictions on British trade be re- moved it may be necessary to impose similar restrictions Japanese vessels arriving at Bri- tish ports.
on
The Under-Secretary for For- eign Affairs, Mr. R. A. Butler, re- plied for the Government.
He said the reply to the first two parts of the question was in the affirmative, and added that discrimination existed as far as warehouse accommodation was made available for Japanese ships but not for British vessels..
The matter had been taken up
with the local Japanese authori- ties at Tsingtao, and representa- tions had been made by Sir Rob- ert Craigie, our Ambassador in Tokyo, pressing for the allocation of further berths or reasonable warehouse space. Reuter.
