Anglo-Soviet Difference

Not Insuperable

London, To-day.

The impression created in London by the first per- usal of Soviet Premier Molotoff's speech, says "The Times" diplomatic correspondent, was that the difference between the Soviet and Bri- tish view is one of form rather than substance.

It is thought that in Moscow the feeling perhaps has gained ground that too much confidence has been expressed in London that the latest

British proposals would meet all requirements.

GAMBLING AT DEATH'S DOOR

TSINGTAO, TO-DAY.

It is also thought that there was probably a desire on the part of M.

Molotoff to convince his audience

that every Russian point must be given the fullest consideration be- fore any agreement could finally be reached.

GERMAN-

COMMENT

WITHHELD

Berlin. To-day.

German political quarters have as yet made no comment on M. Molotoff's speech defining Russia's attitude towards a triple alliance between Britain, France and the Soviet.

German newspapers confine themselves to a full report of the speech under "neutral" headlines which do not allow any conclu- sion as to the Nazi viewpoint.— Trans-Ocean.

JAPANESE IN HASTY RETREAT

Shanghai, To-day.

The Chinese forces in Hupch launched a general offensive yes- terday, according to Chinese re- ports, which claim that success is attending the drive.

The Japanese forces are stated to be retreating towards Yingchen, 85 miles north-north-west of Han- kow, and Kinshan, 90 miles west- north-west of Hankow, "leaving behind, large quantities of heavy arma."***

SUMMARY OF SPEECH

M. Molotoff began his speech with

ANTI-BRITISH PRESS CAMPAIGN

As result of Munich, Germany had been enabled to liquidate Cze- choslovakia, without having to over- come any resistance. M. Molotoff described the seizure of Albania by Italy, German cancellation of trea- ties with England and Poland and the conclusion of an alliance be- tween Germany and Italy as · fur- ther stages in the policy of aggres sion.

The western Powers, it was true, had now accepted the standpoint of the Soviet, namely, that to secure (Continued on Page 28)
