Chungking, To-day.
It is claimed in Chungking that the big Japanese drive launched four weeks ago against Siang- yang and Fancheng, towns on the banks of the Han River, 175 miles north-west of Hankow, has collapsed.
Chinese despatches state that after a desperate battle, in which the Japanese suffered 20,000 casualties, the Japanese troops began to with- draw for reorganisation.
Chinese military circles attach great importance to the victory, which they say further increases the morale of the Chinese soldiers at the front.
At the same time it gives Chinese command another breathing spell of three months in which

The impression prevails among military observers that the present lull must be interpreted as indicat- ing that another storm is coming.
COMING IN HUNANTM
This is most likely to break in Hunan because Japanese troop con- centrations are still being continu- .ed there, although the Chinese at present are unable to gauge the exact Japanese strength.
