DOCTOR OPERATES WITH GUN HELD TO HIS RIBS

Blonde Gun-girl Acts As Nurse

New York, May 4.

With a horsehair sofa as his operating table, a razor blade as his scalpel, and a blonde gun-moll as his nurse, a Chicago doctor performed to-day, with a pistol sticking in his ribs, an operation! usually fatal even in the world's best hospitals. His patient was a gangster wounded in a battle with the police.

Lured to a dingy boarding-house by a tele- phone call that said a woman was in immediate danger, Dr. Siegmund Hirschfield found himself face to face with a red-haired gunman who point- ed to his wounded companion and told the doctor: "Operate or die.”

The patient had just been shot through the abdomen during an attempted hold-up at a tavern close by.

"IT WAS MY JOB" While the doctor worked by the light of a dim lamp he was told that the man whose life he was trying to save had just murdered a man and critically wounded two policemen.

HITLER LOSING

GUIDE

Hitler was held responsible in the House of Commons for a Bill to end burning pit heaps in Bri- tain.

Mr. J. J. Tinker, Socialist mem- ber for Leigh, said: “One of the reasons for this Bill is a man with whom we disagree in many things. I mean the German leader,"

Mr. G. A. Griffiths (Socialist member for Hemsworth) said that burning heaps would guide enemy aircraft.

JUDGE SHOCKED

"Who are you, madam?" said the presiding judge.

To the judge's amazement "she" "I am Marcel replied sharply: Poulain," and, pointing to the wom- an, added: "This is my wife!"

All in court except the judge laughed loudly.

"How dare you come here dis- guised as a woman?" said the judge when calm was restored.

"It has been argued that the clergy, in co-operation with doctors, should treat mental disorders which have their roots in religious pro- blems.
