FILM WITH A PURPOSE
Hollywood is just beginning to see the possibilities of the films as a powerful medium for much-need- ed social reform. And so, although thousands of feet of celluloid con- tinue to be wasted on "tripe," one now and then sees an 'occasional film that appears to ujstify the existence of this major industry.
In this category were such films as "Dead End" and "Blockade"- although the latter was too late to [do more than make Mr. and Mrs. Public realise what the war in Spain meant to the people of that tortured country. Also in this category is "One-Third of a Na- tion" which will be shortly seen in Hong Kong.
!
Somewhat similar to “Dead End," but taking up another phase of the picture, this Paramount film deals decisively with the slum problem; it suggests a solution which should meet with the approval of both Ca- pitalist and Radical. There is plen- ty of strong meat about this pic- ture, and it is a sad commentary that much of its lesson will be lost on many who see it. It is a film that will make people think. Hay- [‚ing_thought, they may do some- thing about it-eventually. In any event, it is a useful straw on the camel's back.—E.G.A.}
