YEAR'S BRAVEST
AMERICA'S PROBLEM SAME AS BRITAIN'S
America is facing the same population pro- blems as Britain. Elementary schoolchildren in the United States number 1,573,000 fewer to-day than ten years ago. There are now 20,565,000 compar- ed with 22,138,000 in 1929.
In another ten years there will be another mil- lion fewer. At the same time, the army of people aged sixty-five and over will continue to increase. These are facts from Washington statistics. America's peak population should be reached in 1960 (between 140,000,000 and 160,000,000).
In Britain the decline has been steady, although not so sharp. But schoolchildren are, however, 1,000,- 000 fewer than in 1913, our present total being only 4,392,000.
