SWASTIKA PLACED
IN ANTARCTIC
BERLIN, APR. 11.
A TOTAL OF 600,000 SQUARE KILOMETRES OF ANTARCTIC IRELANDS HAVE BEEN PLACED UNDER THE SWASTIKA FLAG GERMANY BY CAPT. OF RITSCHER'S POLAR EXPEDI- TION, WHICH RETURNED CUXHAVEN TO-DAY ON BOARD THE VESSEL, SCHWABENLAND,
то
The territory in question is one huge bloc, bounded on the cast and west by an ice plateau rising in a steep slope towards the South Pole the south, and encompassing, in very abrupt rocky declivities.
German airmen, launched in a plane from the Schwabenland car- this ried out survey flights over area and landed on the icelands. At the furthest points of the explored territory, they staked swastika flags and established the Reich's sover- eignty.
Biologist Barklay made investi- gations on the spot into the amount of plankton in the Antarctic waters, with the object of estimating pos- sibilities for whale-hunting.
Capt. Ritcher's expedition was or- ganised by the "Society for German Exploration" under the auspices of Fieldmarshal Hermann Goering, Reich's Air Minister and Director of the Four-Year Plan.
The leader of the venture is an experienced- explorer, being one of the survivors of the German ex- pedition to Spitzbergen.-Havas.
PRINCESSES SEE CHILDREN'S HOUR BROADCAST
and Margaret
Princess Princess Elizabeth sat in the balcony of a studio nt Broadcasting House recently with the King and Queen, watching a Child- ren's Hour programme..
The Princesses are regular listeners to the Children's Hour and had asked to see a "Toy Town" broadcast in the the King and studio. Accordingly Queen took them on a surprise visit to Broadcasting House.
The Royal party entered the small studio BB balcony of the basement soon after a Toy Town story dealing with the "Disgraceful Business at Mrs. Goose's" had started. Mary O'Farrell, who played Mrs. Goose, was just speak- ing the line, "This is a great honour, your Worship."
The broadcast continued without in- terruption, those artists who were seat- ed round the studio rising to their feet. The Princess63 were highly amused at the quavering voice of Larry the Lamb, played by Ewart Scott, and the gut-. tural English of Dennis the Dachshund, otherwise Norman Shelley.
