RECREIO THEIR MATCH SOFTBALL'S MOST

(By "ADREM")

CRAIGENGOWER Cricket Club has been easily the most extraordinary team in the Cricket League this year.

If the season has already provided one record-Recreio winning the League for the first time in the history of the competition Crai gengower must also be credited, or rather I should say, debited with winning the Shield one year, and the wooden spoon

Daydreaming with the ball in play doesn't pay, as Haynes has now learn- ed to his cost!

Palce, who is no batsman, was last man in. One would have thought that Gosano would have had every man in the field almost on the bat-there was now no prospect of the match being lost-but apart from bringing mid-on in a few feet, the same field prevailed. PITIFUL DISPLAY

Their display on Saturday can only be described as pitiful. Dismissed for 78 by Bryan-Gower and John Pearce, Club then obtained these runs for the loss of only one wicket.

A. R. H. Esmail, who batted

very soundly indeed for 33, was the only batsman who ever looked like making runs and I am told that he more or less threw his wicket away later ön. in dis- gust.

Bryan-Gower, who has not played very often in Hong Kong, bowled fairly well but hardly as well as his figures would suggest.

H. D. Bidwell, with rugger now' ba- hind him, made one of his rare appear- ances and made 30 not out, while Ride, back from the south, scored 25.

It was Alec Pearce, however, who caught the eye. His innings was des- cribed as an object-lesson. Chief fea- ture of an all-round display were some beautifully-timed off drives which were fours from the moment they left his bat.

JUNIOR DIVISION INTERESTING

The Second Division had devolved in- to one of the most interesting strug- glen for honours for many years. As matters.now stand no fewer than four teams are still in the running for hon- ours. They are K.C.C., Police, Recreio and University, The first-named,. who have not lost a match, are the most favourably placed, as victory over the Police in their last game, will give them the shield irrespective of what the others do.

On Saturday they did not have the trouble anticipated in beating I.R.C. The latter won the toss and élected to bat, a policy that at the outset, appear- ed to be justified as H. T. Barma and N. Singh, who opened, gave them a good start. Singh was then brilliantly run out by Mulcahy and after that, only M1. Razack showed any confid- ence—he made 88.-

K.C.C-bowling, while never being really dangerous, was steady and runs were always difficult to obtain, McKen- zie, who since the Recreio match, has been in great form, took 4 for 86, while B. D. Lay took 8 for 28 on a wicket which, was not altogether to his liking. GOODBAN MISSED **K.C.C. der about their task of cor- ing the 125 runs necessary for victory, with freshing vigour.. Goodban was mlased on MR. Abbas very early on but thereafter batted very well indeed.
