A further statement by the Prime Minister is ex- pected when the conversations with other coun- tries are completed, says Reuter's diplomatic correspondent.
The United States has been kept fully informed as the situation has developed, and Washington was informed of the contents of Mr. Chamber- lain's statement before it was delivered.
It is emphasised in Whitehall that decision to make the statement was not taken in view of receipt of some disturbing information which was not made public.
