AIR MAGINOT LI

Could Be Bomb- Proofed For £10 5s. A Head

The Home Office Air Raid Precautions De- partment has issued a circular to local authorities all over the country for their “immediate atten- tion," writes our London Correspondent.

*

The circular foreshadows legislative changes in the Air Raid Precautions Act, 1937, and urges on Councils "the need for carrying through A.R.P. tasks as a matter of first urgency."

A general slowing down in the normal work of local authorities is involved in the request that "re- sponsible officers be assigned specific parts in A.R.P. work, and in view of its urgency, should be given as much authority on matters of detail as is consistent with the general control of the au- thority."

SWIFT PROTECTION Already, “the Finsbury Plan" of boring spiral shelters is being taken up by neighbouring boroughs. Lambeth. Bethnal Green and Isling- ton are preparing schemes on the Finsbury model. Other boroughs are to follow suit.

While all London seemed to be crowding round the stands in the last few hours of the exhibition, I talked with Alderman Harold Riley, chairman of Finsbury A.P.R. Com mittee.

Then the excavating begins. The spiral may go down any distance or it may stop after the first storey or two are complete.

The shelters, with air-conditioning devices and every possible safeguard, would cost £10 58. a head of the population.

The Finsbury plan proposes to use two of the shelters as car parks in peace time. Another two, situated at a point where there is à crying need for market storage space, will be used as storehouses.
