AMERICAN REARMAMENT DEBATE IN THE SENATE Immediate Expansion Of Forces Demanded

Isolationists Demand Foreign Policy Statement

Washington, To-day.

"The hostile attitudes of certain dictator-controlled imperialistic nations" were referred to by Senator Sheppard, chairman of the military affairs committee, when the debate on the Gov- ernment's $358,000,000 air force and army re- armament Bill began in the Senate yesterday. Senator Sheppard said his view, which was based on President Roosevelt's recent messages to Congress, was that there must be immediate expansion of the American armed forces with a total strength of 6,000 aeroplanes by 1941. "We cannot draw a line round the sea and land frontier of the United States and say that this alone is what we will defend.

"The Panama Canal, Hawaii, Port Rico and Alaska are vital links in our defence chain.

"To permit these strategic areas to fall into the hands of

the security of the United States.

PANAMA VITAL

BROLLY ANGER

London, Feb. 17.

The Nazis who since Munich have helped on the world publicity for Mr. Chamberlain's umbrella, have at last realised it is nothing but villainous British propaganda.

And they are annoyed.

"At the helm of his umbrella Herr Chamberlain marches into

history as the peace man of Munich,

"

says the newspaper; "Angriff." "That is glorious, ma- terial for British newspapers. But why 'must German-of all papers -amble through their columns

with this umbrella hooked on their

arms?"

Still mixing its metaphors the paper adds: The glorification of

the Chamberlain umbrella seems

to be trying to run a race with the dove of peace."
