PLEA FOR CLEMENCY FOR WIRELESS OPERATOR IN MOSCOW COURT
**
Moscow, To-day.
A crowded court warmly applauded defending counsel, Kommodov, when he made a plea for clemency for Mikhail Vosnissensky, the Arctic radio operator who is facing charges of coun- ter-revolutionary activity and sabotage, Vosnissensky is charged with having hampered search operations for Levanevsky, the famous Soviet airman who perished with a crew of five while flying from Moscow to the United States in 1937.
The prosecution allege that he delayed messages and shut off his wireless 'set.
Kommodoy, at yesterday's pro- ceedings, attacked the prosecutor for finding a counter-revolutionary motive in defendant's alleged sa- botage, "which the testimony of fourteen Polar witnesses did not justify.
Those in court, chiefly Polar-spe cialists and workers, listened -- in silence to the prosecutor's demand for a harsh penalty.
SHATTERED MORALE. Defending counsel attributed ac- cused's breakdown to the severities of Arctic conditions. resulting in a shattered morale and temporary in- sanity.:..
He maintained that although the crime was counter-revolutionary in effect, it lacked the anti-Soviet motive which the prosecutor had illegitimately attempted to prove. -Reuter.
