The new batch of Australian ponies arrived in the Colony in the latter part of last year and have had the benefit of proper care and training in preparation for the forthcoming Annual Race Meet- ing. Quite a few of them have been difficult to control, with the result that several jockeys and riding boys were thrown.

I am afraid this year's new ponies must be described as merely moderate, without any one pony being really outstanding, and there are very few from whom great things are expected.

like Ruby Star the best, although I am not placing much reliance on its ability to win any of the classic events. It has a good movement and I have no doubt that ultimately it will develop into a pony to be seriously considered. For the present, I don't think it is as yet properly tuned up for the big meeting. Rising Star may do well in the race for non-winners.

Poker Tong was fully extended by Crawford and only played well in spasms. His service and heavily slic- ed backhand shot were his best asseta. Li and Tong made a good doubles team and but for bad light would have beaten Teddy Fincher and Crawford, who dropped the first set at 7-5 and then managed to hold their opponents until bad light forced abandonment.

Wei and Hsu started very 'convin- cingly against Gray and Burnett, but after winning the first set they failed to thrust home their advantage. Both were excellent in their net play but were weak in lobbing.

OTHER STABLES

Mrs. Eu Tong Sen's Chiltern is, a fine looking pony, and although it has not been fully extended in training, this pony should be remembered over any distance. It la certainly a strong contender for honours in the Rooty- Hill Derby.

Victory Day, belonging to : S. N. Chau, did a good mile gallop re- cently in 1.88, with a last quarter in 29, and in my opinion it is good for longer distanco events. It may prove a source of danger in the Rooty-Hill Derby.
