INEW GUNBOATS FOR THE YANGTSE FLOTILLA
The second of two shallow-draft river gunboats for the Yangtse flo- tilla building at the Thornycroft yard at Southampton, H.M.S. "Grass- hopper" was successfully launched on January 19th. These vessels will have a displacement of 585 tons and embody considerable improve- ments in armament, which consists of 4in. guns, protection and living ac- commodation for the crew of 74, when compared with earlier types.
It is interesting to recall that the first naval vessels to navigate the upper Yangtse were the British river gunboats "Woodcock" and "Woodlark", built by the same firm in 1898-forerunners of the type of which the "Grasshopper" is. the latest example. So great was the success of these boats that several foreign navies placed orders for similar craft. A special feature of these Quotations of 12 leading Singapore was the tunnel form of stern, which stocks received by Messrs. Ellis and permitted the employment of pro- Edgar from Messrs. J. M. Sassoon and pellers of considerably greater Co., Singapore, dated February 2nd, diameter than the draft of the 1939,
vessels. Middle Price Malay Estate

Until recently it was the practice to send these gunboats out in sec- tions to be re-erected on the river. The "Grasshopper" and "Dragon- fly," however, will be completed at the Southampton yard and will. steam out to their destination. This is rendered possible by their in- creased size and draft over the original type and because, though built of light scantlings, they are: in reality very strong.
