OPERA-LOVING NEWSVENDOR
Benefactors Taken By Surprise
MR. EDWARD JOHNSON, CANADIAN MANAGER OF THE METROPOLITAN OPERA, AND MR. RICHARD CROOKS,. THE FAMOUS AMERICAN TENOR, RECEIVED THE SURPRISE OF THEIR LIVES WHEN GEORGE MALAIKO, À TORONTO NEW. SPAPER VENDOR, TO WHOM THEY HAD SENT A RAILWAY TICKET AND PASS FOR A PER- FORMANCE OF "DON GIOVAN- NI" ARRIVED IN NEW YORK.
They had heard touching tales of Malaiko's passion for Grand Opera. They had heard of his offer ..to supply a newspaper a day for life to anyone who would lend him enough money to go to New York to hear Mr. Crooks sing: They had heard that he often went hungry so that he could buy opera tickets.
And they had decided that such enthusiasm should be rewarded.
Reporters who' greeted Malaiko at the Grand Central railway station therefore, were astonished to find him wearing a well-cut overcoat, white gloves, and bowler hat, and smoking a large cigar.
EVENING DRESS, OPERA HAT
A porter carried his suitcase, which contained evening clothes and operà hat, and Malaiko, a man of 54, jauntily swung his stick as he explained that this was the 18th time that he had come to New York to spend an evening at the Metro-*] politan.
"I could not afford it this year," he stated blandly, "because I have had bad luck with the stock market.”4
Malaiko, it was learned, sells newspapers outside Toronto Stock Exchange. His customers give him market tips which yield such cellent results that he was able to attend the Salzburg Festival in 1928 and again in 1934.
