GOOD SPORT ANTICIPATED AT
MACAO RACES ON SUNDAY
(By* “RAPIER”).
S a welcome prelude to the 1939 Annual Race Meeting at the
Avallee, conté plastic followers of the turf will be provided with
their favourite sport at Macao on Sunday next; when Macao Jockey Club will hold their February meeting.
There are altogether six events on the programme, the last of which is reserved for lady riders. S.S. Tai Shan has been reserved for the occasion, leaving Hong Kong at 9.30 a.m. and returning from Macao at 6 p.m.
Entries for the various events are particularly good, and keen racing should be the order of the day.
RACE NO. 1: THE PLEASANT QUARTERS HANDICAP:
ONCE ROUND.
This race is confined to China ponies, subscription grins of the Macao Race Club of any season, winners of two or more races during 1938 and subscrip- tion ponies of the Hong Kong Jockey Club being barred.
I expect to see the following start- ing:Country Flower (Mr. W. N.
Yen), Golu Clause (Mr. W. G. Poy), Hogmanay (Mr. S. L. Yuen), Hohen- fels (Mr. P. Randolph), Hoperulleg (Mr. G. Treverton),
Meadow Eve
(Mr. S. C. Liang), Merry Fasty (Mr. G. W. Cooper), morning Tip (Mr. A. W. Raymond), Rothesay Bay (Mr. P. Y. T. Wei), Victory Life (r. H. P. Chanson) and Wood Nymph (Mr. R. Calderara).
assume
In view of its win in the Szechuen Handicap (Second section) over nine furlongs at the last meeting, it woula thai seem quite natural to Rothesay Bay has an equal chance of winning here again. Hogmanay
Macao second to Fairy Auk in the Handicap (first section), at the De- cember meeting, but owing to its heavy handicap of 163 lbs., I am afraid cannot recommend it for a win.
ran
Victory Life used to perform quite well and should it start in a mood to run, it will prove dangerous, although it is not quite dependable. I nominate Rothesay Bay to win, with Hogmanay second; and Gold Clause third. As an outsider, Victory Life may be worth a ticket each way.
- RACE NO. 2: THE REPUBLICAN HANDICAP (FIRST SECTION) ONCE ROUND:
Wenning. (Mr. R. Calderara).
Zero (Mr. M. F. L. Haymes), At the last meeting, Gold Sovereign won the Kansu Handicap over halt & mile and, as the distance for this race is over five furlongs, it should just about win again. It will be ridden by Mr. C. F. Chiu, a rapidly improving novice rider.
INTERPORT HOCKEY. PRACTICE MATCHES
A programme of practice mat- ches has been arranged for the Colony's Interport Hockey team to meet Macao on February 19, at Macao, and is as follows:
Wednesday, February 8 Colony v. Combined Indians. (Chatham Rd., 5 p.m.), Sunday, February 12 Colony v. HK.H.A. Tourney XI.
(Club, 10.30 a.m.), `
All 15 players are requested to wear white shorts. The Hockey Association have decided to run a six-a-side Tournament on Sunday, April 2 and entries, will close on March 18.

The remaining lot of "E" Class China Ponies will ngure in this race, and they are as follows:-
Cloudy Star (Mr. S. C. Liang). Double Up (Mr. P. Y. T. Wei). Eagle (Mr. Raymond). Iron Knight (Mr. Poy).

at the last meeting, for which it will have to carry four more lbs. As the pony is in splendid condition, I think Jit should win again, with Shanghai 4
second and Fairy Ousel third.
RACE NO. 6: LADIES' · (HANDICAP UNOFFICIAL)
HALF-MILE.
The forwards gave the impression of being very fit in their aribbling practices up and down the field, while the backs and halves indulged in the usual loosening up work with the Vice-Captain Capt. Simpson, and scrum-haif, acting as coach and instructor.
Ewart, the stand-off-half, dis- played a fine turn of speed and took the ball at all angles and neights from Simpson.

This race will be competed by "E" Class China ponies, of Hong Kong Jockey Club, with the following prob- able starters:-
Cricketer (Mr. Ho Hong Ping). Latitat (Mr. G. W. Cooper). Macs Adventure (Mr. W. G. Poy). National Dignity (Mr. S. L. Yuen). National Triumph (Mr. W. N. Yeh). Btymie (Mr. Hearne).
For winning the Chinghai Handicap.
at (First section) over six furlongs the last meeting, National Dignity has been penalised nine lbs. In spite of this extra burden, I think it can still 0 little win, unless Stymie provides sterner opposition. These two, how- ever, should finish in the same order as before, with Cricketer filling the jother minor position.
RACE NO. 8: THE KUO HUA HANDICAP: FIVE FURLONGS.
This raco is confined to "D" Class ponies of Hong Kong Jockey Club, with novico jockeys riding. The following are likely starters:→→
