ADMIRAL LEAHY INSISTS ON NECESSITY FOR GUAM'S FORTIFICATION

Washington, To-day.

A fully equipped naval base on Guam Island would provide "valuable and needed assistance" to. the United States Fleet in protecting Hawaii, the United States Continent and the Panama Canal.

This was part of the testimony given by Admiral Leahy before the House of Representatives Naval Committee yesterday.

Admiral Leahy added, homever,, on American territory without that such a base was not proposed ducing such a base. in the Navy's current programme for establishment or expansion of naval air bases.

NASHASHIBI REJECTS BRITISH OFFER

Cairo, To-day.

With a view to meeting the demands of Nashashibl, the Arab leader, for equal representation with Mufti of Jerusalem at the London Conference on Palestine, it is understood, that the British Government has proposed that Nashashibi should nominate two delegates supplemented by four or five advisers.

Nashashibi has categorically re- fused to agree, insisting on equal numbers.

It is understood that Sir Harold MacMichael, High Commissioner in Palestine, may make a final effort to persuade Nashashibito accept the proposal-Reuter.

BRITISH ENVOY IN BARCELONA EMBARKS

The British Minister at Barcelona and the remainder of the Embassy:1 staff yesterday embarked on the cruiser HM.S. Devonshire.
