England's Strong Position

Paynter And Hammond Undefeated For 197 & 99 Take Score To 373 For 2 WELL PLACED FIELD ÍS EASILY PIERCED

Durban, To-day. Despite early batting failures, England are in a very satisfac- tory position in the third Test match against South Africa, which opened here yesterday on a 'perfect wicket, Ernest Paynter, Lan- cashire's brilliant left-hander, and W. R. Hammond, being undefeat- ed at the close of play with 197 and 99, respectively, and England's score being 373 for 2.

There were 5,000 people present when Hammond won the toss and sent in Hutton and Gibb, the Yorkshire pair, to open England's innings. Hutton did not last long, stepping in front or a ball from Gordon and was given out leg-before when only 31.

Hutton gave a confident display, driving powerfully and reaching the boundary on four occasions in his 39 minutes at the wicket.

England Will Be At Full Strength EARLIER MATCH FOR "WOODEN SPOON"

(By "REFEREE")`

The final of the local Interna- tional Rugby Championship be tween England and Scotland, which takes place on the Club ground this afternoon at 4 p.m. should produce a very interest- ing match, particularly in view of the many changes in the Eng land team.

At 2.45 p.m., Ireland and Wales will clash to determine the holders of the "wooden spoon" and, as both are fairly well-bal- anced teams, a good game should result.
