It is often a help to a golf be- ginner to regard the golf stroke in the same light as a swinging door to get the correct picture of the arm movement in the stroke. The spinal column for example represents the door jamb and the hinge the left wrist, arm and shoulder. All these must work in unison in the golf stroke to make it smooth and accurate. They furnish the greater part of the swing's motive power. As the door swings accurately each time on follow a consistent swinging pat- this hinge so should the golf club tern when a straight left arm is used. This keeps the clubhead following an identical arc time and is generally termed a grooved swing.
each
Of course the hips revolve, the left shoulder turns until at the top the back is somewhat present- ed to the hole but the back-bone, like the head, remains in a station- ary position so that the backswing and downswing follow a similar arc. The left wrist and arm play an important part of the stroke but the left shoulder is the ma- jor hinge, and the player who re- gards it as such will get more dis- tance than one who uses an arm
