NOTABLE BRITISH AIR INVENTION: FAIREY RETRACTABLE WINGS
London, To-day.
Considerable interest has been aroused among air- line operators all over the world by the an- nouncement of a notable British invention, which is the result of three years' intensive secret research and has now been embodied in the form of retractable auxiliary wings in a new 270 m.p.h. airliner produced by the Fairey Company.
High cruising speeds and reasonably low take-off and landing speeds are combined in the per- formance of this aircraft, which is scheduled for series production next year.
The device provides effective means of varying the wing surface, and therefore of changing the load carried by each unit of the wing
area.
I
For the take-off auxiliary wings are let down from recesses in the after portion of the main mono- plane wings, converting the chine temporarily into a biplane.
ma-
In this position they add suffi- ciently to the lifting area to re- duce the load carried by each square foot of the wing from 32 lb.-ap- propriate for fast cruising-to 25 lb. a figure suited to relatively low take-off speeds and to a quick rate of climb.
AIR BRAKE
For landing, the auxiliary wings are further extended to form a kind of wing-flap which serves as an air brake and again increases lift. The landing speed is thereby re- duced by about ten miles an hour.
The device has enabled designers to make the main wings 30 per cent. smaller, which means less head resistance as well as high wing- loading, and performance is again enhanced.
Weighing nearly 19 tons with a full load on board, the new airliner is designed to carry up to thirty passengers at a cruising speed of 220 m.p.h. on only half of the maxi- mum power delivered by four 1,000 h.p. engines.
AIR CONDITIONING
Conditioned air supplies from the supercharger will maintain low-level pressure
in the cabin when the acroplane is flying high, enabling the operator take ad- vantage of the most economical fly- ing conditions without discomfort to the passengers.
Crew accommodation is provided for two pilots, a radio operator, flight engineer, a cook and two stewards.
Full restaurant facilities and spacious mail and cargo compart- ments in the wings and fuselage, are planned.--British Wireless.
