- LONDON GIRL

TELEVISED

TO AMERICA

London, January 3.

1

Pictures televised from Alexandra Palace, North London, have been seen on a screen in New York, 3,000 miles away.

Engineers at Riverhead radio receiving station have reported to the B.B.C. that they saw "quite clearly" the image of an old man with a wig; the picture of a good-looking girl; and a conjurer.

The B.B.C., so far, have identified only one of the figures-that of Joan Miller, twenty-three-year-old switchboard operator of the "Picture Page" programme, who thus makes history as being the first girl to be televised across the Atlantic.

The event is as historic as Marconi's first faint radio signal from Poldhu, Cornwall, to St. Johns, Newfoundland, on December 12, 1901.

B.B.C. engineers at first beeved that television's maximum efficient range was twenty-five miles. Then reports of successful reception crept in from places as far away as Peterborough, Norwich and Poole. Later I picked up pictures from Paris-200 miles from my receiving station in Brighton.

A B.B.C. expert said yesterday a Trans-atlantic television ser- vice would not be practical until more is known of the upper at- mosphere.

REFUGEES STREAM EUROPEAN

OUT OF CHUNGKING

Chungking, To-day.

of

All main roads leading out Chungking were crowded yesterday morning with fugitives seeking re- fuge outside the city from enemy air raids.

This flight of the masses was the immediate consequence of the Japan- ese air attack on Sunday which was the most violent that Chung- king has yet experienced.

In order to prevent unnecessary loss of life and panic on the occa- sion of air raids, the authorities had already frequently warned the inhabitants to leave the city if possible and seek shelter in the country but these warnings had hitherto generally fallen on deaf

ears.

Since the opening of hostilities, the population of Chungking has doubled, having risen as the result of the immigration of from ap- proximately 300,000 to 600,000 peo- ple.

The authorities now intend com- pulsorily to remove a part of the inhabitants, including families of officials.

Restrictions will, at time, be placed on persons wishing to enter the city so as to keep the

population down to a minimum level.
