Limitation Of Clubs

By BEST BALL

The amended preamble to the Rules of Golf limiting a player's clubs to fourteen in any given round has not kept golfers from their usual low rounds. Scores this year over the professional circuit are as low as formerly. The rule has not handicapped the play- ers to any extent and has proved of benefit to the caddies. To those golfers, however, who are appre- hensive over what course to pursue should one of the fourteen clubs become unfit for play during a round, the following will be of in- terest, It is a footnote relative to the amended preamble and but recently released by the U.S.G.A.

"A competitor is permitted to use during a round only the clubs in his bag when he started except, without unfairly delaying play, (1) he may replace a club which becomes unfit for play, and (2) he may add a club or clubs up to the limit of fourteen without borrow- ing from an opponent or a partner or a fellow-competitor."

Clarification of another issue, concerning replacement is also given:

"Question has been raised as to whether a player in replacing a club unfit for play is obliged to make replacement with a club iden- tical with the one which became
