Mr. Hull's Appeal Affects Plane Exports To Japan
WASHINGTON, TO-DAY: THE APPEAL OF THE SECRETARY OF STATE, MR. CORDELL HULL, TO AMERICAN AIRCRAFT MANUFACTURERS NOT TO EXPORT PLANES OR BOMBS TO COUNTRIES WHOSE ARMED FORCES ARE ACCUSED OF BOMBING CIVILIAN POPULATIONS, HAS BEEN ALMOST COM- PLETELY SUCCESSFUL IN PREVENTING SUCH AMERI- CAN SUPPLIES REACHING JAPAN.
This is according to the Annual Report of the National Munitions Control Board.
Mr. Hull's appeal for voluntary co-operation by manufacturers, was issued on July 1, since when exports of aircraft to Japan have been negligible, although they totalled nearly U.S.$9,000,000 in the first six months of the year.
ONE EXCEPTION
According to the Report of the' Board, there was only one notable exception among manufacturers agreeing to the Government's policy.
The Report discloses that Britain; was the largest purchaser of muni- tions in 1938, with a total of U.S.$29,611,000, consisting mainly of military and non-military planes.
Other purchases included Netherlands East Indies ($10,000,- 000), Japan ($9,241,000), China ($9,180,000), the Argentine ($7,- 219,000), France ($6,446,000) and Canada ($3,171,000).—Reuter.
AIR MISSION'S STRATEGICAL IMPORTANCE
London, To-day.
the
The great strategic import- ance of the British air mission to Australia is emphasised by Reu- ter's air correspondent.
The correspondent states that Australian aircraft production is designed to meet Australia's own defence needs, and in case of emergency the needs of New Zealand and part of the Singapore requirements.
Thus subsequently there would be adequate production at both ends of the Empire air route. Reuter.
