LUNATICS TERRORISE TOWN

New York Fifty violent lunatics terrified Stockton, California, recently when they escaped from a blazing asylum in which were nearly 2,000 inmates, and ran wildly through the streets.

Many of them were nude and shrieked with laughter as they climbed walls and leaped fences in their dash to freedom.

All women and children in Stockton were ordered to remain in their houses behind locked doors while a speeedily mobilised urmy of Legionaries and police hunted the fugitives.

After a long chase and several fierce battles forty-seven of the escapees, some of whom seemed pos- sessed of superhuman strength, were captured.

But three men, each extremely dangerous, are still at large.

SET HIS BED ALIGHT

The fire is believed to have been caused by a patient setting his bed- clothes alight. It spread quickly, causing panic among the patients.

Armed guards, police and fire- men drove the patients from the blazing building to the garden as they shrieked with fear or screamed with laughter.

The fifty escapees had been con- fined in the "violent" ward.
