The “China Mail" learned this afternoon that one of the interned Chinese soldiers who were wounded by guards of the Kumaon Rifles dur- ing an incident following an attempt to escape STOP PRESS from the internment camp at Matauwei yestër- day afternoon, died in the Kowloon Hospital this morning.

The deceased's name

was Mar Hung, aged 40

years, it is learned. He was shot in the attempt to escape.

The other soldier is still detained in hospital. His condition is reported to be slightly improving,

Concerning the incident

the "China Mail" is official- ly informed that the incident developed when of one the Chinese soldiers walked up to a sentry of the Kumaon Rifles and told him he intended to leave.

The sentry warned him, but the soldier refused to go back and made an attempt to break through. He was shot while running.

The guard then took the in- jured man back into the camp, and other inmates began to stone the guards.

For some little time, there was considerable excitement in the camp. One of the men at- tempted to seize a rifle and was bayonetted.

After that the military took command of the situation, and the camp is now quiet.
