THE STAMP COLLECTOR'S CORNER

-By Mariel Nissen-

THE year 1940 will be a most im-

TH

portant date in the annals of philately, for it will mark the 100th of anniversary of the introduction postage stamps. It is almost cer- tain that Great Britain will honour the occasion with a special stamp. issue in a design yet to be selected. The perfect design for this centenary stamp has been somewhat prema- turely used by Brazil, and the only wonder is that someone didn't use it

before.

The Brazilian Philatelic Exhibition at Rio de Janeiro, held from October 20 to the 30th, occasioned the issue of this adhesive which is held to be one of the most interesting stamps of all time.

At

Featured on the stamp is a por- trait of Sir Rowland Hill, father of his postage stamps, who receives first philatelic tribute.. Ir the upper left corner is a reproduction of the first British one-penny stamp. the lower right appears a reproduc- tion of Brazil's first adhesive, stamp popularly known as the "bull's eye".

Brazil was the second country in the world to use stamps, follow ing Great Britain in this practice by three years.

1

Sir Rowland Hill was born in 1795 and died in 1879. He began to teach mathematics at the advanced age of 12 and continued in the role of edu- cator with great success until failing.

in health compelled his retirement .1833.

He then turned his. attention to in-. - ventions for a time and later became greatly interested in the work of co- lonising Australia. The deficiencies of the existing postal system had bothered him for sometime. It was the practice in those days for the person to whom a letter was address- ed to pay for it, and he had the pri- vilege of accepting or refusing the message. People clever at codes were able to transmit a message by outer cover only so that the recipient could refuse the letter after a cur- sory glance at the envelope had re- vealed the information required. Postage rates were so high that this procedure was indulged in with great frequency.

One day Sir Rowland Hill observed a servant girl refuse a letter because she lacked the shilling to pay for it.. Feeling sorry for her, he advanced the money, then insisted that she open the letter for her message. With great reluctance she complied, only to reveal a blank sheet of paper- as the contents of the envelope. The message had been conveyed by the outer covering,

Hill realised that a great source of revenue was available to the govern ment for a workable postage system, and he went to work to evolve pre- paid postage, as we know it to-day. His ideas were so revolutionary that he had great difficulty in having them accepted, but he won and the result was the beautiful and famous one- penny black, adorned with a profilt of the youthful Queen Victoria. The stamp was issued on May 6, 1240 and that, stamp collectors, was the beginning of your hobby.

The 30a stamp, appearing at the left of the sheet, is printed in red and bears a view of the Ericson sta- tue, standing in Iceland's capital city of Reykjavik. This work was exe- cuted by A. Sterling-Calder, Ameri- can sculptor, and was presented to the people of Iceland by the United States on the occasion of the millen- ary of the Icelandic Parliament in 1930. Another view of the statue is presented on the 408, purple, value.

Iceland's coat of arms appears at the top, centre of the sheet and below that is the inscription "Leifr Eirics- sons Day, 9 Oct, 1938". The inscrip- tion along the bottom reads, "Leifr Eiricsson, Son of Iceland-Discover- er of Vinland".
