Referring to the past year, Mr. Chamberlain says: "Rejecting the view that war is inevitable, and that our only task is to prepare for it, I have consistently sought to remove possible causes of war, and by direct consultation and discus- sion to secure à new and more full measure of confidence and under- standing between nations.
"My hope and aim is that by this means the international problems of our time may be settled in a spirit of conciliation and co-opera- tion."-Reuter.
FRANCO REPLY ON DAMAGE TO BRITISH SHIPS
LONDON, TO-DAY. THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT HAS UNDER CONSIDERATION THE REPLY RECEIVED FROM GENERAL FRANCO ON THE QUESTION OF PAYMENT OF COMPENSATION FOR DAMAGE DONE TO BRITISH SHIPS TRAD ING WITH SPAIN.
It is anticipated that the Note will be submitted to the committee of British shipowners trading with Spain for their consideration.
The communication constitutes a reply to the plan evolved between the British Government and the committee of ship owners and con- fidentially submitted to France.- British Wireless.
CONFIDENTIAL PLAN The compensation plan is confi- dential, but Reuter understands that it is an elaboration of the pre- vious plan under which compensa- tion would be paid in the case of bombing considered deliberate by a commission specially set up to adjudicate.
The previous plan broke down after it was learned that General Franco intended compensations not to be paid immediately but after the civil war was concluded.-Reu- ter.
